X-Ray

X-rays, or plain radiographs, are a way for healthcare professionals to capture images of the inside of your body. X-rays use radiation to produce black-and-white images that are interpreted by a radiologist. They are most commonly used to examine bones and joints, but healthcare professionals can also use them to quickly diagnose other conditions such as lung infections.

When is an X-ray performed?

  • Your healthcare provider may request an X-ray to:
  • Check for broken bones.
  • Determine the cause of symptoms such as pain and swelling.
  • Look for signs of infection in the lungs.
  • Detect the presence of foreign objects in the body.
  • Examine structural issues in bones, joints, or soft tissues.
  • Plan and evaluate treatments.
